Who We Are
Vital Connections of the Midlands (Early Head Start Program) is a community-focused early childhood organization dedicated to supporting children, families, and expectant mothers through high-quality early care and education services. As part of the Early Head Start program, we provide comprehensive services that promote healthy development, school readiness, and family well-being.
We believe that strong beginnings create lifelong success. That’s why we work closely with families—not just children—to build a foundation of learning, health, and stability.

Our mission is to empower children and families by providing nurturing, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate early learning environments that support growth from pregnancy through early childhood.
What We Do
At Vital Connections, we provide:
- Early childhood education for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers
- Support for expectant mothers
- Family engagement and support services
- Health, nutrition, and developmental screenings
- Safe, nurturing learning environments
Our programs are designed to meet the whole child and whole family, recognizing that education, health, and family stability all play a role in a child’s success.
Who is Eligible?
Pregnant women and children aged six weeks to two and a half years old and meet the Federal Income guidelines.
Individuals are required to live in our service area as defined by the following zip codes:

*Scholarships are available for those who qualify.
Documents required to apply:
Contact a Family Advocate at one of our three early head start locations in Richland County.
Annual Open Enrollment Period: February – June
- Proof of income from the previous year
- Previous year’s W2s or 1040 tax form
- Child support statement
- Public assistance statement: SSI or TANF
- Proof of pregnancy or child’s age
- Crib card or Birth certificate
- Proof of pregnancy from a physician
- Two proofs of address verification
- Lease or mortgage statement
- Proof of homelessness
- Utility bill
- Car registration
- Proof of Medicaid, WIC, SNAP
